6/5/07: Following lab findings of acetominophen (Tylenol) in 5 bags of dry pet food, an Itchmo reader reports
one of his cats died and one is still very sick from acetominophen in Hill's Science Diet Sensitive Stomach formula dry cat food confirmed by lab testing. Both
cats were diagnosed with acute renal failure--but it should be noted
that acetominophen is usually toxic to the liver, not the kidneys. Another reader lost a cat in January that was Pet Pride cat food, which tested positive for acetominophen and cyanuric acid.
4/17/07 -- FDA issued a recall for dog chews made by T.W. Enterprises, Ferndale, WA due to contamination with Salmonella. This follows an earlier warning by FDA to the same company. Affected products include:

T.W. Enterprises Inc. manufactured these dog chews and distributed them throughout the United States under its name. The affected products were distributed before March 22, 2007 to retail locations and are non-coded, i.e. they have no batch code or other identifying marks. T.W. Enterprises has made contact with all of its consignees and has been informed the affected product has been pulled from store shelves.
4/05/07 -- FDA warning issued for American Bullie A.B. Bull Pizzle Puppy Chew and Dog Chew due to potential contamination with Salmonella. Made by T.W. Enterprises, Ferndale, WA.

Dog Chew Jumbo, 26 inch 3/29/07 -- The Iams Company was warned by FDA to take chromium tripicolinate out of future formulations of its Eukanuba Veterinary Diets Optimum Weight Control and Restricted-Calorie dry and canned products for dogs and cats. No recall was ordered. FDA said Iams had failed to prove that this unapproved ingredient is safe for pets. Chromium tripicolinate is considered genotoxic--it may cause tumors--and is only allowed in livestock feed. The FDA's warning letter was dated 1/8/07 but was not posted on its website until after the Menu Foods recall. It has since disappeared again. Isn't it nice that Iams has so many friends in high places?
3/9/07 -- Pet treats recalled: "Berkley & Jensen" Pig Ears dog treats and Dingo® CHICK'N JERKY Treats for Dogs, Cats and Ferrets due to potential contamination with Salmonella. Low-fat pig ears, bulk pig ears, and pig ear strips have also been added to the recall.
3/16/07 -- Wild Kitty Cat Food (raw meat) recalled due to potential contamination with Salmonella.
- Raw Chicken with Clam Recipe, Net Wt. 3.5 oz (100g) and Net Wt. 16 oz (453.6g);
- Raw Duck with Clam Recipe, Net Wt. 3.5 oz (100g) and Net Wt. 16 oz (453.6g); and
- Raw Tuna with Conch Recipe 3.5 oz
No reports of illness were associated with this product. It should be noted that FDA's report talked only about risk of illness to humans, and never said it was a problem for cats.
3/7/07 Jermuk Spring Water. Since many people give their pets spring water, we wanted to include this warning for products distributed around Los Angeles. The following bottled water products were recalled on March 7 due to contamination with arsenic: - "Jermuk Original Sparkling Natural Mineral Water Fortified With Natural Gas From The Spring". .
