Redox Signaling Molecules

Our bodies are made up of trillions of cells. Each cell has a function. When a group of cells get together to perform a function, they are then called a tissue, and a group of related tissues comprise an organ.

While we know it’s important to have a healthy liver or a healthy heart, the level at which we truly live and die is at the cellular level. We should be focusing on having healthy liver cells or healthy heart cells. In fact, the quality of our life is determined by the health of our cells!

Cells and Cell Signaling

A cell is essentially a bag of salt water. (Remember that Star Trek episode when aliens referred to humans as “ugly bags of mostly water”? Even Data agreed that it was an accurate description of human beings!)

Inside each cell are little power plants called mitochondria [mai-tuh-kon-dree-uh]. These are found in every living cell of every animal (except bacteria). Mitochondria produce energy in the form of a molecule called ATP. And for every molecule of ATP that is generated, a pair of “redox signaling molecules” are also produced. During normal metabolism, these molecules are produced in a perfectly balanced pair: one is positive and the other is negative.

Scientists have known about these redox molecules for a long time, but for many decades believed that they were merely waste products of cellular energy production; much like carbon monoxide is a waste product of a car engine. You’re probably familiar with some of these molecules; they’re commonly referred to as “oxygen free radicals.”

Free radicals are extremely important in health and disease. Unbalanced and unregulated, they promote inflammation, disease, and aging. Diseases from allergies to diabetes to cancer all have their roots in inflammation promoted by unbalanced redox signaling molecules.

But when they’re in balance, redox signaling molecules are absolutely foundational to cellular health, and fundamental to life. In fact, if your body didn’t constantly produce them, you’d die within minutes!
